Micromax A116 Canvas HD : Features, Specification, Price and the next big thing in indian android market.

It seems that homegrown mobile maker; Micromax is leaving no stone unturned to achieve the maximum market share, especially in India. And with the launch of Micromax A116 Canvas HD, it looks like; the company has no intention to give a break in the production of new smartphones, phablets and tablets.
This new handset is an Android based smartphone, or we can say, Micromax has launched its new phablet. The success of Canvas A100 and Canvas 2 A110 in the 5-inch smartphone segment has given a huge exposure to the brand, and the result is the launch of all new A116 Canvas HD.
Canvas Design and Hardware:
  •  This 5-inch giant comes with an impressive design and finishing. It seems that A116 has borrowed the design from its predecessor A110 but looks bit slimmer to the latter.
  • It comes with MediaTek MT6589 Cortex A-7 quad core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz.
  • It also includes a dedicated Power VR series 5 GPU for enhancing graphics quality.
  • It has dimensions of 144 x 74 x 10.7 mm.
  • You can expect to get Android v4.2 Jelly bean when it is launched.
 Canvas Screen and Display :
  • It has 5 inches IPS LCD capacitive touch-screen with 16M colors. IPS LCD type display enhances viewing angles as compared to TFT LCD.
  •  The screen resolution is 720p HD, (1280 x 720 pixels) with pixel density of 295.
  • It supports multi-touch and includes scratch guard to protect screen, but canvas hd doesn't sport the much loved gorilla glass screen as of what i have heard. Canvas 2 even doesn't have a gorilla glass screen.
Canvas HD Camera :
  •  It comes with brilliant camera of 8 megapixels with LED flash and auto-focus.
  • You can get clear pictures of resolution 3264 x 2448 pixels and record HD videos as well.
  • Along with this, there is also a secondary VGA camera of 0.3 MP included for video calling through 3G networks or for web calling.

Canvas HD Memory :
  • Canvas HD comes with 1 GB of RAM.
  • This high amount of RAM will make the smartphone more powerful in multi-tasking.
  • It will come with inbuilt memory of 4 GB.
  • Along with this, you can also find a micro SD card slot to expand memory up to 32 GB.
 Canvas HD Other Features :
  • It is dual SIM smartphone and supports GSM SIM cards(GSM+3G). Both SIM’s are operational at the same time.
  • It also has 3G. You can easily get 3G downloading speeds of 42 mbps and uploading speeds of 5.76 mbps.
  • Connectivity options like Bluetooth v3.0 and micro USB v2.0 have been included for sharing files between Bluetooth compatible devices.
  • It has a 2100 mAh powerful battery.
Canvas HD Price and Availability:
  • Going on sale in the beginning of February, the A116 Canvas HD will cost Rs. 15,000 ($280), and is unlikely to make its way to the United States in the near future, if at all.
Canvas HD Tech2get pre-launch verdict :

Looking at the features on paper, the phone seriously packs one hell of a punch and a very tough contender for the 5' inch so called phablet category.

Is Google + really poised to kill Facebook.... Read it out to know

The first impression of Google+ is good, but for many people it looks like a Facebook with Group Video chat. At first glance, Google Plus appears to be a derivative of Twitter and Facebook. People are even claiming that, it will fail like Buzz. But I have different thoughts.
Google+ is better than Buzz and is poised to give Facebook folks the sleepless nights. Steps of Google towards a social network seems promising. Google+ comes with clean design and with some exciting features like Circles, Hangouts, Huddles, and Sparks. Circles let you share things with your desired group of people. Hangouts let you have group video chat with your friends and family members. Sparks let you search your favorite topic, and lets you add those topics in your interest list.
Google has always wanted to be a king of Social Networking, after Orkut and Buzz that failed to catch up and sustain themselves to the competition. Google has today launched the new Google + Social networking engine. In a simple attempt a black bar appears at the top of the google pages with a +you button.
One of the most notable services in the Google+ networking is the Circles. What this basically lets you do, it that it allows you to select your group of friends and assign them into groups (or circles) then when yo post updates you can select who all you want to update.
Hangouts is one of the killer features of Google+. Hangout is sort of group video chat. You click on the Hangout button and invite members of a certain group/circle, by sending them a notification. And it’s easy to use this feature. It’s directly challenging the number of video chat products like Skype. And Facebook don’t have this feature. “Sparks” button lets you to explore your interests; it’s like bookmarking your favorite pages. The +1 Google button is integrated to your Google+ profile, which can be considered as Facebook Likes.
Google has gone all out by launching the mobile app along with the service, which for one has an instant uploads folder which would upload all your images on the Google+ account in a private album and you can share those images with your status.
Google+ is still in a limited trial mode and looks like all their invites are gone, we will have more on this soon !

Samsung Galaxy Ace Android 2.3 Gingerbread Firmware Leaks

Samsung is quite popular for poor software support of their Android smartphones. The company only committed to releasing the Android OS updates for the Galaxy S handsets, and never mentioned anything about other Galaxy branded handsets.
The company did release the Android 2.2 FroYo update for the Galaxy 3, but has kept mum on the Galaxy S L and the Galaxy Ace Android 2.3 Gingerbread update.

However, it looks like the Galaxy Ace will get the Gingerbread love from Samsung. The folks over at SamFirmware have managed to get their hands on a leaked Gingerbread firmware for the Ace.
Users who flashed this firmware on their handset did report some performance and stability issues. The leaked ROM has quite a few bugs as well. Other than this, the ROM features some updated items and the new goodies brought about by the Android OS update.
This leak does confirm that the Galaxy Ace will get the Gingerbread update from Samsung. Hopefully, Samsung will also release the Android 2.3 Gingerbread RM for the Galaxy S L. Nevertheless, it’s still nice to see Samsung releasing Android OS updates for a mid-range phone.
Interested Galaxy Ace owners can head over to SamFirmware.com and download the leaked Gingerbread firmware for their handset.
You wil also get a step by step update process from TECH2GET. Don't worry if you are not understanding the update process .

Mono for Android released, lets .NET developers build Android apps

Novell today announced the availability of Mono for Android, the first solution for developing Microsoft .NET applications for Google's Android platform. This essentially allows .NET and C# developers to use their existing skills to easily create Android apps. Mono for Android consists of the core Mono runtime, bindings for native Android APIs, a Visual Studio 2010 plug-in, and an SDK that contains all the tools needed to build, debug, and deploy apps. Developers trained in Visual Studio can thus continue developing with their preferred IDE, while using their existing skills and .NET code, libraries, and tools, as well as C# programming knowledge. The Visual Studio 2010 plug-in lets engineers develop, debug, and deploy their apps to an Android simulator, an Android device, or the Android Market.
Mono for Android complements MonoTouch, Novell's solution for developing apps for Apple's iOS (iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch). Novell is thus pitching Mono for Android and MonoTouch to .NET developers as an option that will save them time and money because they will be able to share common code between iOS and Android on smartphones and tablets, as well as Windows Phone 7, Windows desktops, and Windows Server.
There are four tiers of Mono for Android: Student ($99), Professional ($399), Enterprise ($999), and Enterprise 5 ($3,999). You can check out the differences between them at mono-android.net/store, but we recommend that you grab the trial either way first.
"Since the introduction of MonoTouch in 2009, developers have experienced how Mono streamlines mobile application development," Miguel de Icaza, Mono project founder and vice president of Developer Platforms at Novell, said in a statement. "As a result, many asked us to build a similar tool for Android. We developed Mono for Android to give both individual developers and businesses a way of sharing their code across multiple mobile platforms, increasing efficiency and reuse of their C# and .NET expertise across the board."

TECH2GET VERDICT :
According to me its a good thing that .net developers can start developing androids apps. Atleast minimizing the learning curve . But; the only drawback that i found was that it didn't have a designer included with it. As most of the developers use a designer for usually developing the apps.

Free Video Calls on iPod, iPhone,Android and Symbian with Front / Rear Camera Support

Mobile Video Calling is still not so affordable and many a times not utilized to full potential owing to restrictions and hurdles. Thanks to Apps, Smartphones today, allows free video calling over 3G / 4G / WiFi or simply any data connection.
Here I list some cross platform Applications for Mobile Devices which lets free voice calls and Live Video calls over any Data Connection.

Tango

Tango is quite new application and my favorite just because of its simplicity. You don’t need to make a profile either; you just install Tango, start it up and you’re ready to make video calls. Tango scans your Contacts and find friends who are already using Tango or you can also invite some from Address Book.
Tango works over both Wi-Fi and 3G and connects iOS (iPhone and iPod Touch) and Android devices. It’s easy to turn video on and off during a Tango call. Also, you can switch between Front Facing and Rear Facing Camera during calls. Visit Tango
I tried it on Airtel EDGE, Video Calling works but continuous streaming is problem, you get Still image many a times so 3G or WiFi is recommended.

Fring

Fring is another popular application which is also available for Nokia / Symbian Devices. Fring enables video calls between iOS and Android devices and works over 3G, but it requires you to create a profile and is a little more complex than Tango. Visit Fring

Qik

Qik allows you to connect over 3G and WiFi and works for both Android and iOS devices. As of now, Video Chat feature is limited to few Mobile Devices. Along with Video Calling, it supports Video Sharing called as Video Mail which are uploaded to your Qik Account. Visit Qik.
Data Charges apply as per your plan but still I would say it is far cheaper than Video Call rates implemented by Mobile Networks.

WP7 Predicted To Outgrow Android, WebOS MIA

Market researchers from IDC expect Google’s Android to capture more than twice the smartphone platform market share of Apple’s iOS this year. However, it’s growth will slow down and the opportunity will transition to Windows Phone 7 (WP7), which will become a more popular smartphone OS than Apple’s iOS.
IDC believes that Android will hold 39.5% of the smartphone market by the end of the year, which is predicted to be ahead of 20.9% of Nokia’s Symbian, Apple’s iOS with 15.7% and RIM’s 14.9% of Blackberry. Windows Phone 7 and Windows Mobile are waiting at the back of the field with a share of 5.5%.
However, IDC expects Microsoft to come roaring back and grow WP7 shipments by an average of 67.1% every year, which would give Microsoft the spot behind Android in 2015. IDC expects Android’s growth to slow to 23.8% per year, the iOS compound annual growth rate to 18.8% and Blackberry’s growth to an average of 17.1%. The result for 2015? Android holds 45.4% of the market, followed by WP7 with 20.9%, iOS with 15.3% and Blackberry with 13.7%. Is it just me or is HP’s WebOS missing in this list? Perhaps it is part of “others”, which account for 4.6% of the market, which would mean that HP’s $1.2 billion investment in acquiring Palm won’t be paying off. There was no information how much market share WebOS may hit, but at less than 5%, it would be a fish dead in the water.
IDC’s predictions are largely based on the fact that WP7 will soon be running on Nokia phones (2012), but there is some general doubt whether this alliance will pay off as Nokia and Microsoft expect it to. Nokia recently laid out substantial risks in the adoption of the platform, there are risks of Microsoft alienating its other partners through the Nokia relationship and WP7 is a largely unproven platform with challenges as far as the platform creation, including the Windows Marketplace, is concerned. The stars have to align for Microsoft in order to be able to come close to IDC’s prediction. We would take this forecast with a grain of salt and wait until we are seeing a stronger move toward WP7 and improved shipment numbers.
“Android is poised to take over as the leading smartphone operating system in 2011 after racing into the number 2 position in 2010,” said Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC’s Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team. “For the vendors who made Android the cornerstone of their smartphone strategies, 2010 was the coming-out party. This year will see a coronation party as these same vendors broaden and deepen their portfolios to reach more customers, particularly first-time smartphone users.”

Firefox Mobile 6 To Get Hardware Acceleration in Q2

Mozilla published the first outline of features for the upcoming versions of Firefox 6 and 7.
Firefox 4 Mobile has just been released as the technically most advanced browser for Android and Maemo, but Mozilla is advancing the mobile platform just as fast as the desktop version, which is already available as Firefox 5 preview.
Firefox 4 Mobile is based on the core Firefox 4 technology, which includes the JaegerMonkey JavaScript engine,  but hardware acceleration is missing at this point. The Mozilla roadmap currently has no information about Firefox 5 Mobile, but notes that Firefox 6 (Mobile) should enable layers acceleration using OpenGL ES on “at least a subset of Android hardware.”
We are expecting hardware acceleration to be enabled on the mobile version of IE9 as well, which means that Firefox would ensure the competitiveness of the Android platform as far as web browsers are concerned – even if we believe that Google is preparing a mobile version of Chrome for Android.
Proposed features for the desktop versions of Firefox are WebGL anti-aliasing for version 6 and (cross process) hardware accelerated layers composition on “all supported desktop platforms” in Firefox 7. Firefox 6 is due in early Q4 of this year, while Firefox 7 is targeted at mid-Q1 2012. Interestingly, the mobile version of Firefox 6 is listed under Q2 goals, which may refer to a non-final release only.

Android 2.2 on Samsung Wave (BADA OS) , Froyo running on Wave S8500

Samsung Wave is quite a popular ad powerful smartphone released last year. It has everything concerned with hardware specification but only low down point is its operating system – BADA and its restrictive environment.
Though, we tried WaveSpoofer to install cracked apps on BADA but still, Samsung Wave owners always wanted to have Android running on their devices and Polish hackers have successfully ported Android 2.2.1 of Samsung Galaxy S to Wave S8500 equipped with BADA.

This project is named as AndroBADA and it is in Alpha stages, facing problem with RAM and CPU access. It isn’t available for testing purpose for public and still in private Beta.
As this phone was releases along with Samsung Galaxy S and customers always wanted to have Android running on Wave. And, this porting makes somewhat sense instead of porting Ubuntu and Windows to smartphones which is just experimental resulting out of curiosity.
I would be happy if Hackers become successful and release the development ROM for Wave users as the device is fully capable of running it boasting 1GHz CPU and 512MB RAM

Amazon’s Android Appstore, Fat-Fingering Will Cost You — Literally

A couple days ago, in writing up some thoughts on Amazon’s new Android Appstore, I noted that the app buying process may be a little too easy. You see, just scrolling through the feed of apps, I accidentally clicked a buy button. That immediately triggered a transaction. And guess what I found out today? There are no refunds. You might not think this is a big deal because while the Android Market gives you 15 minutes to get a refund (down from 24 hours) Apple’s App Store also technically doesn’t have an app refund process (though you can get one if you jump through some hoops). But there’s a big-little difference between the App Store and the Appstore (besides the tiny name difference, that is): an entire click.
In the App Store, it’s actually two clicks to buy an app. You first click click on the price, and then the button turns into the bright green “Buy Now” button. It’s only after this second click that the transaction happens. This more or less stops mis-clicks. Further, if you haven’t been browsing the store in a while, they’ll prompt you to re-enter your password before you complete a purchase.
In the Appstore (again, Amazon’s version), it is literally one click. If you touch the screen in the wrong place — whoops — you just bought an app. Of course, this is assuming you have one-click purchasing turned on. But if you do on the web, you will in the Appstore. That’s what happened to me. It’s super-convenient when it works. And super-annoying when you make a mistake.
On Amazon’s website, one-click is great because it greatly speeds up the buying process. But since most of the things you buy on the website are tangible things that have to be shipped, it’s relatively easy to cancel a mis-click. Not so in the Appstore where there is nothing to ship.
And it wouldn’t be a huge deal except for the fact that Amazon isn’t offering app refunds. How do I know? Because after some digging on Amazon’s website to figure out how to possibly get a refund, I had to send an email about my erroneous charge. (For the record, they did erase my charge, but indicated that they were making a one-time exception in doing so.)
Long story short, if you’re prone to mis-clicking on touchscreen, make sure one-click purchases are turned off on Amazon. Otherwise it will cost you — literally.

How To Hide Specific Photos and Videos From Android Gallery ( Tried it on Samsung galaxy ace)

Many of us, or I must say, almost all of us have images and videos on our Android devices, we want hidden from other people. By default there is no option to exclude a specific folder from gallery, you can password protect your files using some application from the market but none comes with out a hefty price tag.

Yesterday night I was doing some research on my Samsung Galaxy S and got a superb idea as to how you can hide a folder from Gallery and stock file manager. The application used in this process is free to download from market.
1.As stock File Manager for Android is not adequate to do the trick, download and Install Astro File Manager from market. The application is free to download and use.
2.Now select the Folder you want to hide from the gallery and long press on it. Suggest to create a new folder and later import all your private data in it.
3.On the File Options popup menu, tap on edit and select rename.

4.While renaming just put a period(.) in front of the folder and confirm.
5. From now on that folder will be treated as system folder and will be hidden from your Gallery and stock File manager.
6.Now just import all your private files and folders into that folder using Astro File Manager and live a tension free life.

HTC Wildfire

HTC is on sabbatical from its high-end line with the Wildfire. There is nothing really wild or fiery in the specs of this mid-end Android handset. Compared to most of the company's Android offerings, it naturally has smaller screen with paltry resolution, and a low-end CPU. They don't promise much of a performance, but the phone is certainly a looker. When we add the familiar sturdy construction HTC is in the hall of fame for, the company's foray into the budget Android line with the Wildfire might just do it justice.

What's in the box:
  • HTC Wildfire
  • 1300 mAh Li-Ion Battery
  • Quick start guide and warranty card
  • Charger
  • microUSB cable
  • Headset with microphone
Design:

The handset strays away from the usual tall and narrow look of pure touchscreen phones lately, boasting a more squarish, intriguingly disproportionate shape, which makes it pleasant to look at, and comfortable to hold. Plus the weight is just right, so that the phone doesn't feel like a toy in the hand.

The HTC Wildfire's 3.2” screen has a 240x320 pixels QVGA resolution, which we are more accustomed to see in cheapo 2.8” types. At 3.2”, the pixel density lets you almost count the individual dots when close to the display, and we are not exaggerating. On top of that legibility and viewing angles really suffer outside under direct sun rays, unless brightness is at the fullest. At least the screen supports up to 16M colors, and is capacitive with multitouch, which brings a world of difference in terms of scrolling and responsiveness.

Underneath that wonder of nature, the Wildfire's screen, are the four Android navigational buttons in capacitive touch form, backlit in white. They return haptic feedback, if that feature is turned on for the touchscreen. The phone comes with HTC's trademark optical trackpad, which also serves as a shutter button. The ear speaker above the screen looks like a BMW grill, the way it is split in two parts, and is a nice design decision, similar to what we have on the Desire. Beneath it on the left of the HTC logo is the notification LED.

The lock/power button is situated on the top right, while on the top left is the standard audio jack. The left side houses the volume rocker – a whole piece – and the unprotected microUSB port. All keys are chromed and with a good travel click to them.

The sides of the HTC Wildfire

The HTC Wildfire sports a 5MP camera with LED light, the lens of which are elevated above the back cover like a periscope. It looks different, but we can imagine all sorts of scratches and bruises arising from that frivolity. The back has a wide strip of plastic with brushed metallic looks running across it. It obviously got inherited from the HTC Desire, as it's even the same brown color. The material also surrounds the screen and the sides, with the exception of the curvy bottom where the soft touch plastic of the back panel transitions to the front up to the optical trackpad, thus making the lower front side look like a three-layered cake. That soft touch plastic is above the back metallic strip as well, surrounding the camera, and, as usual, brings an air of comfort to holding a phone. Thanks to these touches the overall look and feel of the HTC Wildfire is that of a high quality designer handset. If the brown finish of our review unit doesn't click with you, there are versions dressed in white and red as well.
Interface and Functionality:

HTC Sense at that pixel density looks stretched, and its elements jagged. We won't dwell on it too much since we already reviewed the last changes to Sense UI brought in by the HTC Legend - that's exactly what you will find on the HTC Wildfire, from the widgets and messaging to the gallery. The HTC Desire had live wallpapers behind the latest Sense UI - a nice perk that Android 2.1 brought - but they are absent on the Wildfire. Most probably HTC wisely concluded that the interactive wallpapers might choke the slow 528MHz Qualcomm processor, and omitted them, as they did with the Legend. The interface is actually smooth since the CPU speed, and the 384MB RAM, are obviously enough for   Sense UI. The helicopter view (where the seven homescreens appear as six cards circling the minimized default one with the clock) can be most easily accessed on the HTC Wildfire with the usual homescreen pinch-in with two fingers.

A 3.2” screen size is certainly not great for an on-screen keyboard, especially for bigger thumbs. The HTC Wildfire's default Sense UI keyboard does make you look at it all the time for mistypes, since responsiveness is a bit slow. Same goes for the screen reaction to the accelerometer - it takes just a tad more than it should.

Performance:

HTC Wildfire Review
The incoming call volume was good in the ear speaker, and the voice quality was acceptable. The other party was hearing us fine as far as strength, but the voice was distorted, especially high-pitched conversations. There is no videocalling on the HTC Wildfire as there isn't any front-facing camera, and no application to use the primary one is preinstalled. The loudspeaker is of average strength, and sounds tin and hollow.

Battery life certainly benefits from the slower CPU and the unpretentious screen. With the default 1300mAh unit the phone is rated to clock in as a minimum 8 hours of talk time, even in 3G mode, which is very good for an Android handset.

Conclusion:

The HTC Wildfire's display seems to be the main sacrifice on the altar of affordability, along with the fairly timid processor. We think there should be a law forbidding phones with great design to be underpowered and paired to low-res screens. Joking aside, if we didn't have these gripes with the camera quality, the HTC Wildfire would be a decent first stop for inexpensive introduction to the world of Android touchscreen phones. We certainly enjoy the phone's proportions and battery life, though, plus HTC's tradition of coining phones with great design and superb build quality is exemplified fully in the HTC Wildfire, despite its low-range specs status.
